The Trainnet® Serial Link Gateways are used to create train consist networks even though they are commonly used for direct train sub-system integration. Trainnet® Serial Link Gateways come with at least two serial interfaces. Modbus and customized protocols can be used. Available serial interfaces include RS-485 (half or full duplex) and RS-232. The RS-485 full duplex can be used for RS-422 applications.

The modular design of the gateways enables the addition of other Serial Link interfaces as well as other bus interfaces such as WTB, MVB, CAN and Ethernet. It is to be noted that Input/Output modules can be added to the same rack to build a complete coach computer.

A Trainnet® Serial Link Gateway is made of at least one Central Processing Unit (CPU) and one power supply. If a limited number of serial interfaces are required, the Trainnet® CPU modules such as Trainnet® CPS and Trainnet® CPG can be used. These two CPU modules provide three RS-485 half duplex interfaces. Two RS-485 interfaces can be combined to obtain a RS-485 full duplex interface, which can be used for RS-422 applications. The Trainnet® Serial Link Interface Unit (SIU) module can be used when more interfaces are required or when needing RS-232 interfaces. SIU allows for up to 8 serial interfaces: please read about SIU for complete information. The physical layer level and parts of data link layer are implemented within SIU and higher protocol layers are implemented on the system CPU. The routing between the Serial Link buses and other buses are implemented by the train computer CPU module.

As described above, additional bus interface modules and I/O cards can be added to provide additional capabilities. EKE has developed a comprehensive range of CPUs and bus interface modules to accommodate most technical requirements and budgets. The Trainnet® Serial Link Gateways are usually provided as fully integrated systems, fitting in either 44TE or 84TE wide rack (smaller upon request). The rack height is typically 3U or 6U. The Trainnet® Gateways are designed with ease of use in mind. Trainnet® modules have interface connectors at the front and communicate with each other via the back plane (except the Ethernet modules ERU and ESU). The module allows for mechanical coding of F-48 connectors to prevent connecting wrong cable to the module. Other modules such as Event Recorders can also be integrated to the same rack for a compact and cost-efficient system.

The Trainnet® Gateways are modular. Modules are inserted in a rack of suitable size and features (see Step 5 for common rack sizes).
The information below will give you a good overview of possible gateway configurations.
Other options exist and we recommend you to contact us to develop the most efficient solution for your needs.

 

STEP 1. Choose a CPU
The CPU manages the gateway functionalities. It can:
→ Manage gateway modules and connected train sub-systems
→ Implement and control the train Passenger Information System (PIS)
→ Carry out sub-system diagnostics and log events
→ Run train crew HMI Software Applications (CPG only)
→ Run the ISaGRAF® PLC Software to develop automation and functional applications

Power Supply Unit for VME (PSV)

Description:
- Provides 5 V DC and 12 V DC output to power the gateway
- Operated with 24, 36, 48, 52, 72 and 110 V DC via the Trainnet® PIU

Description:
- Pass the train battery voltage to the Trainnet® PSV module
- Input voltage can be 24, 36-52, 72 or 110 V DC
