EKE’s system to be used for the prevention of tram over-speeding

EKE’s system to be used for the prevention of tram over-speeding

EKE, via its partner in the UK Sella Controls, is involved in the development of a physical prevention of over-speeding (PPOS) device for the London tram fleet. The onboard system will combine technologies from both Sella and EKE with the aim to provide additional safety.

The PPOS system is part of a contract awarded to ESG by Transport for London (TfL).

All 35 trams in the London fleet will have the device fitted and fully operational by the end of 2019.

The PPOS system will read the speed limits from balises positioned on the tram tracks. In the event a tram is travelling above the speed limit, the PPOS system will automatically apply service brakes and stop the tram.

An alarm will also be sent by the system to the London Tram control room via 3G/4G. The system will have a safety integrity level 2 (SIL-2).
